Charles Bradley – a funk/soul/R&B singer signed to Daptone Records and now a 2011 POPPED! Music Festival act performing on Saturday, September 24th!
Charles first found an audience when he began making appearances in local Brooklyn clubs performing his James Brown routines under the alter ego of “Black Velvet.” Thomas Brenneck, songwriter and guitarist for the Bullets, met Charles and they began working together. Charles confided with Thomas and told him his challenging childhood and his painful past including the story of the death of his brother. From them on, Brenneck knew that Charles needed to translate his story into music.
At the time, Brenneck was in the process of forming Menahan Street Band, an amalgamation of members of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, The Budos Band, Lee Fields & the Expressions and Antibalas. The Menahan Street Band is one of the most sampled bands in the business and has been sampled in Jay-Z’s signature horn sound for his smash “Roc Boys (And The Winner Is)” and Kid Cudi’s sampled their guitar lines for “Mr. Solo Dolo.” The music is steeped in classic soul and afrobeat but displays an acute awareness for hip hop.
Many late night writing and recording sessions later, he and Brenneck completed their first full-length record, No Time For Dreaming.
Paste Magazine has called this “one of the best Daptone releases to date.”
